Back in the 50's

No, not the temperature (although it is supposed to be 51 degrees tomorrow!)...I'm talking about my mileage. Last week was my first week this training cycle that I broke the 50 mile per week mark. Here's how it all played out:

Monday - 6 miles over lunch at a Goldilocks pace (not too fast, not too slow!)

Tuesday - 11 miles of triple play that I wrote about last week....great run!

Wednesday - supposed to be 10 miles but my Garmin was dead so I ran a route I thought was about 10 miles. Turned out it was only 8.75 miles so a little short. I also underestimated the temperature that night and was a frozen block of Sarah when I got home! I walked in the door and Bryan exclaimed "Your ears are a color red I have never seen skin before!!"

Thursday - No run, but 60 minute swim class. We did about 30-40 minutes of actually swimming and then learned how to dive off the blocks. Let me tell you they are a lot higher than they look, but at least I didn't belly flop like some of the people in my class...ouch!

Friday - Easy 6 miles at lunch on a nice sunny day

Saturday - 18 mile long run with Janette out of Fitcorp that included the Comm Ave hills. My legs were feeling heavy but overall the run went well. Averaged 8:46 min/mile which is a little faster than most of my long runs but I'm pleased with it.

Sunday - I usually don't run on Sunday's but it was 45 degrees and sunny so Bryan and I went out for 4.2 miles along the river. It was still pretty icy so it was a slow run but my legs felt good after Saturday's 18 miler. I think I might start adding in a post-long run recovery run to see how my legs handle it.

So there you go.....54 miles for the week! I plan to increase a little more over the next few weeks.....so far, so good and my body is handling the mileage well. Another 10 weeks until race time!!

The Love-Hate Relationship

Last night I did the run I love to hate. Its the type of run that you dread all day.....that you can't wait to finish.....that makes you feel like you could accomplish anything!

Let me back up...due to the snow and a cancelled swim class, I shifted my runs a little this week. Last night ended up being what I term the triple play run. It's a little different each week, but always involves a mix of 3 different things. I actually like doing these runs on the treadmill because it allows me to have more control over my pace rather than constantly looking at my Garmin and stressing about hitting the appropriate paces.

Here's how last night's run played out:

15 minute warm up
3 miles at goal marathon pace
3 x 800m at 5k pace with 3 minute recoveries
3 miles at tempo pace
10 minute cool down

Overall it added up to 11 miles for the day. Now looking at this combo of paces you can see why I hate this run....marathon pace + 5k pace + tempo pace.....yikes!! That last tempo mile was rough and I went to my new "go-to" song on my ipod to keep my legs turning over. But once I was finished, I felt great. It gave me such a confidence boost and reminded me that I am stronger than my brain often tells myself that I am!

Can you feel the love yet?
